June 13 & 14

Richard Sandell today became the first player to win both the NSW Billiards & NSW Minor Billiards Championships in the same year - records for the NSW Championship date back to 1901 and the NSW Minor Championship to 1909.

Richard won the 3 hour final 868 to 700 against Todd Hayward. For Todd, having made 8 semi-finals in his 18 year history with the event, a place in the final was a great and well earned achievement. He also made the highest break in the championship, a magnificent 209. And it should be noted that Todd too is a past NSW Minor Billiard Champion having won that event in 1991.

Spectators were rewarded with some very entertaining Billiards during the 3 hour final. Todd Hayward also achieved the highest break in that match, 105, as well as breaks of 90, 42, 33, 31, 31, 30 & 30; Richard Sandell achieved breaks of 84, 81, 67, 61, 55, 45, 43, 42, 40, 38, & 31.

Our thanks as always to Bill Hart for his management, Graham Willoughby for all his hard work in heading-up the Billiards sub-committee, the tournament referee, Frank Galanos, and to all the spectators who attended through-out the event.

I would also like to acknowledge the great support received from Smithfield RSL Club in sponsoring and hosting the event again this year. Their support is most appreciated by all those involve in our sport. The club facilities are first class and staff were, as always, most helpful, courteous and friendly. We recommend Smithfield RSL to anyone looking for first class Billiards & Snooker facilities.

Yours in Billiards
