The South Pacific Open Snooker was held for the 4th consecutive year at Club Marconi on the 12th - 13th of September. A field of 59 players from all over Australia competed in this National Ranking Snooker event.
The final was contested between Shawn Budd (NSW) and Glen Wilkinson (NSW) with Shawn taking out the event with a 4-1 victory. Shawn Budd has had a good season climbing to number 4 ont he Australian rankings after winning this event and a win at the Fred Osbourne Classic earlier in August. Glen has had a great season as well winning the Oceania Snooker, Australian National Snooker and the Australian Masters.
The semi finals were also best of 7 frames. In the first semi, Shawn Budd defeated an in form Roger Leighton (VIC) 4-0. Roger had a great tournament after defeating top seed Steve Mifsud in the last 16 and current NSW Snooker Champion Paul Balzer in the quarters.
In the other semi final, Glen Wilkinson had a strong win over local Roger Farebrother 4-0. Roger had defeated Glen earlier in the year in the NSW Snooker Championships at the same venue.
The highest break of the event went to Steve Mifsud (VIC) in the first round with a break of 117 after missing the final pink for a potential 130 tc.
Although the numbers were less than last year, it was great to see the support from so many interstate players. Especially the junior players that travelled being Shaun Dalitz, Jason Dalitz, Charlie Chaffe and Ryan Thommerson and to local junior David Elishapour.
Thank you to all the sponsors who made it possible for the event to go ahead namely Club Marconi and the NSW Billiards and Snooker Association. I think everyone would agree that the snooker room was a vast improvement and the addition of a new table supplied by the NSW Billiards and Snooker Association was a huge positive. Thanks to Jim Ruisi for his volunteered effort in revamping the woodwork for that table.
Thanks again and see you all next year!
