Congratulations to Kuki Zhan of Sydney - 2017 NSW State Women’s 'Minor' Snooker Champion.

The event was hosted over the weekend of 10th-11th June by long-time supporters, Club Toukley RSL.

Kuki, who is also a keen pool player, entered this tournament for the first time last year where she made the equal high break. This years she’s taken it to the next level, claiming both the Championship and the high break prize.

After a steady Day 1, Kuki scored the high break of the tournament (25) and qualified third in her group. She upped her game on Day 2, starting with a convincing 2-0 win in the quarter final against local Joy Perkins and a 2-0 win over another local, Marion Dale, in the semi.

Last year’s runner up Lou Lou (ACT) was consistent again this year, qualifying second in her group in the round robin stage. With a 2-1 win in a tough quarter final against Kerrie Spindler (Central Coast), she then went on to defeat Monica Brettle (Sydney) 2-0 in another tough match.

Both ladies were impressively calm and composed during the final, which went down to the wire! There was little separating the two ladies. Both fought hard with a mix of great potting and strong safety. Kuki took the first frame, but Lou Lou fought back and took the second. The final frame had spectators on the edge of their seats, coming down to the black ball. Lou Lou almost had it but jawed the black, leaving it for Kuki to claim the 2-1 victory.

Many thanks to our major sponsor, Club Toukley RSL. This is the 9th consecutive year that the Women’s ‘Minor’ Snooker has been hosted and sponsored by this club.  They continue to be a great supporter of our sport at all levels and we are extremely appreciative of the ongoing support and hospitality of the Board of Directors, management, staff and members.

A big thank you also to Toukley RSL Snooker & Billiards Club who were welcoming and supportive of the ladies all weekend. We had a great turn out, with a steady stream of spectators throughout the event which gave the players much encouragement.

The Women’s 'Minor' Snooker Championship is a traditional stepping stone for women to become more involved in the game at a tournament level. With support and encouragement to try the Minor format they soon see it can be a fun experience and not as daunting as first thought. That was certainly the case again this year with a wonderful sense of camaraderie amongst all players.

Equalling last year’s high of 11 entries, it was great to see both new and familiar faces. The future of women’s snooker in NSW continues to look bright. With a dedicated sub-committee and the assistance of current players and supporters, it remains the aim of the BSA NSW to continually seek and encourage increased participation in women’s snooker.
