This year’s 6 Red Snooker Championships were held at Club Marconi for the first time, on the 29/30 August. The club has fantastic facilities and one of the best Snooker Rooms in Sydney.
A field of 28 players assembled on Saturday morning for a best of 5 round robin play, the group format was well received from the players as it provided good value for money.
There were 7 groups of 4; the top 2 qualified for the last 16 knockout played on Saturday. The quarter finals onwards were played on Sunday through to the final with some very entertaining snooker on offer throughout the weekend.
Jom Wangta defeated last year’s winner Hassan Kerde 6-5 on the Black for his 1st NSW State 6 Red Snooker Title. Jom was a solid performer all weekend and played extremely well and he also had the highest break of 71 and missed the pink 3 times on 50,59 & 58. Congratulations to Jom and also to Hassan for making the final. The final was top draw Jom lead 2-0 and Hassan rattled off the next 4 but Jom fought back to take the next 3, only for Hassan to force a decider, and be one shot away from closing the match out with 2 reds left. However he left the door open for Jom who he needed no second invitation and made a nice clinical clearance to win the frame & match on the black in style. Hassan also missed the green twice on Maximum (75) breaks.
Terry Emmett had another great tournament playing his usual solid brand of snooker with a great win over tournament favourite Joe Minici in the quarter finals 5-2 But in the semi final he came up against Jom who played incredibly consistent snooker and the best any of us have seen him play. Jom is surely one to watch in future tournaments. In the other semi-final Hassan was too strong for Gary Mares who also had a great tournament and up until then showing some great form.
Thank you to all the players who entered and a big thank you to Club Marconi, and their members, particular Jim Ruisi who gets up at the crack of dawn to prepare the tables. Thank you to all the players who entered and a big thank you to Stuart Tait & Neville Moore.
Until next time, enjoy your snooker
